Feature Article | Are men afraid of rejection?

By Chinemere Kristen Ikpe.

“  It’s true that there are only two primary emotions, love and fear. But it’s more accurate to say that there is only love or fear, for we cannot feel these two emotions together, at exactly the same time. They’re opposites. If we’re in fear, we are not in a place of love. When we’re in a place of love, we cannot be in a place of fear.”

—Elizabeth Kubler Ross

Men are seen to be fearless, relentless, strong and are assumed to show little or no emotions in certain situations. When they want to, they are quickly reminded to be tough “Be a man”  as one that can take on any fight are expected to show no emotions and stand firm in life threatening issues.

Is the male figure so strong as projected in the society? Are men emotionless and feel no pain and emotion?

As strong as the male figure is projected, men have fears and feel emotions too, they are very human and feel pain too, especially in matters of the heart.

“82% of Men are afraid of rejection despite the fact they act tough”

Relationship/marriage  counsellor Adim Ogudu  who has been practicing for 5 years in  Lagos, Nigeria says that about  82% of men are afraid of rejection despite the fact they act tough.

Men are natural hunters and enjoy chasing, as much as they enjoy this role, they go through a lot of dilemma when trying to woo a woman, they battle with themselves in the process if they will be rejected or accepted.

They often initiate relationship, marriage and sex ,they encounter rejection a lot especially when their advances are refused.

Sometimes it comes from constant rejection from their past, constant disapproval from women often creates this fear which grows over time.

“ Their friends make fun of them when rejected by their love interest and when rejected, it shatters their sense of pride.”

Seated on a red couch, 25 year old Afro-pop singer Muffius with dreads that are slightly tinted at the tip and reaching for his jaw affirms that men are indeed afraid of rejection.

He describes himself as a confident young man, he says no matter how courageous and confident men act  hearing the word “NO” really hurts.

He revealed that he sometimes falls prey to this. He says every man goes after a woman he loves initially with the idea that they would be accepted.

Furthermore, When rejected, it kills his self-esteem because it makes him feel like he is not good enough.

He stated that there are two things that make men afraid of rejection: their friends make fun of them when rejected by their love interest and when rejected, it shatters their sense of pride.

Also, It makes him feel like he is not good enough and this makes him to start to question himself, especially when he is turned down by someone he least expected.

He described that when he was rejected by his love interest, he did not want to try again, he decided to take a break from the person and look elsewhere. He added that most time young men go after people that are easy and wont reject them.

“We need to be civil when refusing affection or love from men

Relationship expert Farida Emmanuel, stressed that a lot of men are afraid of rejection and often go  out of their way to impress their love interest, they borrow cars, cloths and houses to impress girls, when turned down by the girl  they went all out for they sometimes don’t know how to handle it.

We need to be civil when refusing affection or love,  some men become really sad. A callous refusal  can twist a man’s respect for women , it can even extend to bitterness or hatred.

Educated men have no qualms approaching any lady”

Vanascious a  good looking man, plump and dark in complexion , who is in his early forties , married with three lovely children says he has not been rejected by any of his love interest ever before.

He believes that men who are afraid of rejection lack self-confidence and exposure. He says women love bold men, a man with charisma, men with  panache ,and good finance.

Educated men have no qualms approaching any lady, he stressed that self-confidence does most of the work for you as a man.

“The fear of being turned down has made many men settle for unfulfilling relationships, being with people that barely love them but only tolerate them.”

Today in our society,  a lot of men go after women who are easy and  would not reject them. Many men with low self-esteem who live with the  fear of being turned down have settled for unfulfilling relationships, being with people that barely love them but only tolerate them

“You have to reject me to make me crave you more, I enjoy the chase, the more I chase the more I value you”

Kelechi a business man Thirty years of age said he struggled with rejection growing up, but this only made me stronger.

He said If I tries to woo a woman and she is too easy for him, I he would lose interest in no time.

He said “You have to reject me and make me crave you more,  I enjoy the chase, the more I chase the more I  value you”.

Finally, Some men are afraid of rejection and some are not, but a greater percentage of men are afraid of rejection from the other sex. Rejection should not be something a man should dwell on, it’s a stepping stone.

sometimes when rejected it has nothing to do with you and even if it does, the same reason a man is rejected could be the same reason he’ll be accepted by another so keep trying!.

THE ART OF MULTI STYLING

Multi styling is the art of recreating several looks with one fabric which changes your appearance and vibe. Which is one way to know stylish people, they might not have so many clothes but the way they mix it makes you forget they had that top.

Fisayolonge a fashion blogger, gives a vivid example.

we can see how she styled this skirt with different tops and shoes which gave a different vibe.

We can see how she styled this pants in three different ways which can be worn for different occasions.

HOW I FOUND MY PASSION

Processed with VSCO with au5 preset

hi guys! today is bit about story time, sit back and enjoy.

As humans if there is anything I know, it is that we are driven by what we feel, the things we love, the things we look forward to, the things that gives us hope and keeps us going, the reason we won’t take no for an answer.

I’ve always loved to read and discover new things, it was just something I enjoyed doing but was not something I did because I couldn’t control it I did it because I knew I had to, I didn’t want to fail.

However, when I entered my first year in uni, I realised I loved putting outfits together, I enjoyed dressing my friends up, making them look good and it meant and took nothing from me.

I was literally the go to girl in school for ideas and color combinations which I enjoyed every bit of it.

After my University days I knew I wanted to dive into the fashion thing but I didn’t know how. I was afraid( was a very fearful girl) I just had fears. I was encouraged by one of my friend who was a YouTuber who I know would want to be anonymous in this piece but she played a huge roll in my life and I can never forget her,

she pushed me, shot with me, sacrificed her time and even thought me how to use a camera.

sometimes we need someone to just listen to our funny ideas and tell us “just do it” regardless of how it sounds. I put out many outfits , some were good some were bad, she would always push me and correct me when needed

I found that this was my passion when I don’t mind spending my last cash on clothes, I don’t mind travelling a far distance just to get the aesthetics I was searching for that would complement my outfit.

In Abuja, I was basically a suitcase, always going out with one for photoshoot to an extent my dad thought I was crazy, because he found it weird when I pull out a suit case and say “I’m going out.”

I remember him saying to my mum “hold this your daughter oh! she’s running mad”

SO WHAT THEN IS PASSION?

Passion is a strong will to do something regardless of the outcome, strong and barely uncontrollable. You don’t take no for an answer, you don’t care who is watching, you don’t care if they laugh, you only see the finish line. You just know that its either it or nothing, its what keeps you up all night, its what keeps you burning, its what comforts you, its all you hope of, its all you dream of, there is no plan B there is no other option.

almost sounds like love, it’s something that you feel incomplete without, it’s all you have ever been , it’s all you want, it’s where you belong , it is home.

Remember Robert in acrimony? he always saw the finish line even when his batteries never worked for over 18 years , he kept trying.

That indeed is passion.

on my instagram I don’t care about my following, I don’t care who is watching all I just want to do is share as much as I can, I want to be out there I want to put my work out there, I want to see that my work inspires you, and you’re coming back for more.

That is passion and a bit like love.

5 things to know before moving to Ireland

Ireland is a beautiful country, it is found in the North Atlantic. Ireland is actually an island, separate by great Britain by its east and is the second largest island of the British isles.

Enough about the background, haha! I don’t plan to bore you you geography.

If you know me before now, I lived in Nigeria all my life and only moved to Ireland 4 months ago. It was a big change for me, but what’s life without change?

I moved to Ireland to do my masters and despite the fact I had a few friends here who told me what its like, I must say I had my personal experience.

Before coming to Ireland you should know this:

  1. Irish people are so friendly: They are very friendly people, ever get lost? don’t panic, don’t worry, they will give you directions and chat with you like they have known you for a long time.
  2. It rains without signs: In Ireland it rains without warning. I was particularly warned by my friends before coming, and thought it was a joke. the sun can be shinning for a minute and before you know it it could start raining.
  3. Ireland is a beautiful place: I have been in Ireland for about four months now and I can say every time I go out I still get amazed by structures, the environment, the road connections, I visit some places and I”m in awe. Its a good tourist centre.
  4. House rent is pretty high: I live in Dublin and I must say that the house rent is quite high, if you decide to come visit or for masters programme you can live in places with low rents like Santry, Lucan, Dundalk which can help you save more
  5. Tea is a thing here: Prior coming to Ireland, I thought coffee was everyones go to, especially for work but oh I was wrong. The Irish people really love tea and when I say tea, they have different ways they make their tea, there is no particular pattern, everyones approach to tea is unique in their own way.
